Atomic Structure

APPLICATION OF BOHR’S THEORY AND HYDROGEN             Spectrum:-
Hydrogen atom is an important example of atomic spectrum. Spectrum of hydrogen is obtained from hydrogen gas discharge tube. We get several isolated sharp lines called spectral lines. The wavelengths of these lies in the visible, extravert and infrared regions. These can be shown in the figures.

The spectral lines obtained in the spectrum of hydrogen are classified into the following four groups. They are named after their discovers
.

  1. LYMAN SERIES:-

These lines lie in UV region they are obtained when electron jumps from the outer most to the 1st energy level i.e  to

  1. BALMER SERIES:-

These lines are in visible region, they are obtained when electron jumps from out most shell to second energy level ,n=2

  1. PASCHEN SERIES:-

They are in IR region. They are obtained from the jumps of electron from outer most shell to the third energy i.e n=3

  1. BRACKETT SERIES:-

They are in I.R region. They are obtained when electron jumps form outer most shell to forth energy level i.e. n=4

  1. PFUND SERIES:-

They are in I.R region. They are obtained when electron jumps form outer most shell to fourth energy level i.e. n=5
